Whenever I have the chance, I try to dress up as Toad from Toad Hall to celebrate my grandfather, Wyndham Payne, and the wonderful illustrations he did for the first UK edition of Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame.

I’m playing around with colourful sketches at the moment rather than relying on photos. It makes for a more creative way to make lasting memories.

Chelsea Arts Club summer party this year with some sketched views of the garden. Oh look, there I am dressed as Mr Toad again!

Dolly & the Rhinestone Cowboy night at Chelsea Arts Club last December. I always dress up as a character from Wind in the Willows to help people remember my grandfather’s illustrations from the book.

Throwback to Chelsea Arts Club summer ball from 2025 with the theme of “La Dolce Vita”, the iconic 1960 Italian satirical drama directed by Federico Fellini.

What a fabulous fancy dress evening!

Halloween Hat Night at Chelsea Arts Club. No photos allowed in the club so I have been doing some sketches lately. Makes a change from Porcelain but it’s a lovely way to make memories.

Some more Hat Nights at Chelsea Arts Club. It’s a fun way of *almost* being fancy dress but less commitment!

Stephen Grey-Harris – who sadly died last year – donated a beautiful chalice to the Chelsea Arts Club with a lovely wooden base. I then did a painting of the chalice on it’s stand with the garden and tree in the background.

I did two versions as he wanted the chalice to be higher up in the image and this second version was included in an exhibition in May 2026 with the theme of “Club Life” with all the pictures submitted displayed in the corridor.

Stephen was a prominent antique jewellery and silver expert, antique dealer, and the owner of the historic Grey-Harris & Co jewellers in Clifton, Bristol.

The beautiful tree that dominates the garden at Chelsea Arts Club as seen from inside.
